This fresco (1587–1594) by Tommaso Laureti depicts Roman hero Gaius Mucius Scaevola. After a failed assassination attempt on Etruscan King Lars Porsenna, Mucius thrusts his hand into a fire to prove his bravery. Set in an Etruscan camp, the scene emphasizes Roman virtues and is part of a series celebrating the early Roman Republic.
