Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius
This bronze statue (c. 175 AD) depicts Emperor Marcus Aurelius on horseback, symbolizing power and peace. Originally gilded, it survived due to being mistaken for Constantine the Great. The emperor’s adlocutio gesture and absence of armor highlight his peaceful rule. The horse’s Sarmatian saddle cloth commemorates his victory over the Sarmatians.
