Combat between the Horatii and CuriatiiGiuseppe Cesari

Giuseppe Cesari’s painting depicts a scene from Roman legend during the war between Rome and Alba Longa. The Horatii and Curiatii, two sets of triplet brothers, fought to settle the conflict. The surviving Horatius, after pretending to retreat, defeated the wounded Curiatii. He later killed his sister for mourning her Curiatii fiancé, leading to his initial condemnation, which was overturned by public appeal.
