Heracles and the Nemean Lion

282
This black-figure vase (6th c. BC) shows Heracles fighting the Nemean Lion, a beast with impenetrable skin that no weapon could pierce. In his first Labor, Heracles was forced to wrestle and strangle it with his bare hands. Athena stands by, her presence signifying divine aid. The scene embodies the Greek heroic ideal: courage, struggle, and victory against impossible odds.
