This marble statue, initially believed to depict Antinous, Hadrian’s beloved, is now recognized as a Roman-era copy of a 4th c. BC Greek statue of Hermes. Discovered at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli in 1723/24, it was acquired by Pope Clement XII in 1733. The statue exemplifies the refined aesthetics of classical sculpture.
