Giuseppe Cesari’s fresco, created in 1612–1613, illustrates the legendary duel between the Horatii and Curiatii during King Tullus Hostilius’s reign (7th c. BC). The Horatii brothers of Rome fought the Curiatii of Alba Longa, with the battle deciding the war and leading to Alba Longa’s submission to Rome. The artwork highlights themes of valor and destiny in Roman history.
