Bust of Commodus as Hercules

56
This marble sculpture (180–193 AD) features the torso of a Triton, a mythological sea creature with a human-like upper body. Originating from the Horti Lamiani, it was part of a group including the bust of Commodus as Hercules. The Tritons, carved in white marble, symbolize a marine procession celebrating the emperor’s apotheosis, a theme common in Roman sarcophagi decoration. This piece reflects the grandeur of Roman imperial iconography.
