Bust of Commodus as Hercules with Tritons
This Roman bust (191–192 AD) depicts Emperor Commodus as Hercules, crafted from Luni marble. Commodus is shown with Hercules’ attributes: the Nemean lion’s skin, the apples of the Hesperides, and a club. Two Triton torsos accompany the bust, symbolizing a marine parade celebrating Commodus’ apotheosis. This motif was also used in sarcophagus decoration, highlighting the emperor’s divine elevation.
