Carle Vernet’s 1789 painting depicts Roman general Aemilius Paulus’s triumphal procession after his victory over King Perseus of Macedon in 168 BC. Paulus leads prisoners, including Perseus and his family, as the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus rises behind, symbolizing divine favor. Presented to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture , it was exhibited at the Salons of 1789 and 1791.
