Basilica of St John Lateran

Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is Rome’s cathedral and the pope’s seat as bishop of the city, founded by Constantine in the 4th c. on the Lateran estate as the first great public church of imperial Christianity. Rebuilt after fires and reshaped by Francesco Borromini in 1646–50, it layers early Christian authority with Baroque ceremony. Its 13th c. cloister, with the Vassalletto workshop’s cosmatesque columns and carved lions, preserves a quieter medieval vision of order within a monument meant to speak for the Church.
