59
Giuseppe Cesari’s fresco (1612–1613) depicts the legendary duel between the Horatii and Curiatii brothers, symbolizing the conflict between Rome and Alba Longa. Two Horatii die early, leaving the last brother to defeat the Curiatii individually. The victory turns tragic when the surviving Horatius kills his sister for mourning her Curiatii fiancé, underscoring themes of loyalty and familial conflict.
