Bronze Statue of a Camillus

62
This bronze statue (14 BC–68 AD) depicts a camillus, a youth assisting priests in Roman sacrifices. It features silver-inlaid eyes and copper-detailed lips. The right hand originally held a libation vessel. Its proportions reflect Polykleitos’ Greek art. Misidentified as Constantine in the Middle Ages, it was preserved. The design parallels depictions on the Ara Pacis, highlighting its ritual significance in ancient Rome.
