Ancient Roman Basalt Millstones

These basalt millstones (2nd–3rd c.) belonged to a large flour mill. The hourglass-shaped lower stones and conical upper stones were turned by animals to grind grain on an industrial scale. Their number and size reflect the logistical backbone of Rome’s food supply, highlighting the city’s organized and mechanized approach to feeding its people.
