Mosaic of Epictetus Buticosus with Bathing Tools

This mosaic (2nd c. AD) from the Terme di Buticoso shows Epictetus Buticosus with a bucket and strigil (scraper), tools used in bathing. His name appears in a Latin inscription beside the figure, identifying him as the probable patron or builder of the baths. Bathing played a central role in Roman social life, serving both hygienic and communal purposes.
