This mosaic (2nd c. AD) from the frigidarium of the Terme dei Cisiarii features a Triton, the mythological merman herald of the sea, wielding a staff and emerging from curling waves. With his human torso and coiling fish tail, the figure embodies the power and mystery of the ocean. Such marine imagery in baths evoked a realm of rejuvenation, myth, and elemental force.
