Mule Cart with Passengers

This floor mosaic (2nd c.) shows a four-wheeled cart drawn by two mules, with a standing driver brandishing a whip and three seated passengers. It comes from the frigidarium of the Terme dei Cisiarii, baths linked to Ostia’s cart-drivers’ guild. The scene may highlight the guild’s role in moving people and goods that sustained the port city’s economy.
