Neptune and Amphitrite

This mosaic (2nd c.) from the Terme Buticoso (Buticoso Baths) shows Neptune with his trident beside Amphitrite riding sea creatures across a patterned marine field. As queen of the sea, Amphitrite complements Neptune’s authority through calm, ordering power. In a bathing complex, such imagery linked water’s cleansing effects with themes of renewal and maritime sovereignty.
