Marine Deity on a Sea Creature

This mosaic (2nd c. AD) shows a marine figure, likely Neptune or a Triton, riding a hybrid sea creature with curling fins. It formed part of the decoration at the Terme dei Sette Sapienti, where aquatic themes suited the bathing environment. The pairing of deity and creature indicates how Roman bath complexes used mythic imagery to frame water as a domain of power and leisure.
