This mosaic (3rd c. AD) is located in one of the numbered commercial stationes (offices) in Ostia’s Piazzale delle Corporazioni, the hub of commercial guilds. Two ships and a leaping figure evoke the agility and peril of maritime trade. Representing maritime traders, the mosaic reflects the cosmopolitan and logistical complexity behind Rome’s imperial supply chain.
