Marble-Lined Pool

This pool (c.2nd–3rd c. AD) in Ostia’s House of the Nymphaeum reflects elite domestic luxury. Its walls were clad in opus sectile, a technique using cut pieces of colored marble fitted into geometric designs. Unlike mosaic, which used tiny tesserae, opus sectile gave a polished, prestigious finish, marking the wealth and refinement of Ostia’s upper class.
