This opus sectile floor (4th c. AD) from the Domus di Amore e Psiche combines giallo antico, pavonazzetto, porphyry, and serpentine in interlaced circles of polished stone. The inlaid technique—composing images from cut marble—reveals late Roman mastery of geometry and illusion, turning domestic decoration into a meditation on order and controlled splendor.
