Hunters and Beasts

This mosaic (2nd c.) from the Terme dei Sette Sapienti (Baths of the Seven Sages) arranges armed hunters and wild animals among swirling vegetal scrolls. Spears, leaping bodies, and rearing beasts evoke venationes (arena hunts), where men fought captive animals before spectators. The fusion of violence with ornamental pattern turns lethal sport into a refined emblem of courage and elite leisure.
