This mosaic (2nd c. AD), from the Bath of the Seven Sages, shows a hunter poised with a spear against a lunging lion. Scenes like this evoked the Roman venationes—theatrical hunts that symbolized domination over wild nature. In elite bathhouses, such imagery reinforced values of courage, control, and the refined brutality of Roman spectacle.
