Archaic City Wall with Latin Inscription

274
This section of Ostia’s earliest city wall (late 4th–early 3rd cc. BC) is built from large tufa (volcanic stone) blocks in the early Roman style. The Latin plaque, a later addition, identifies the site as part of the ancient cittadella. These fortifications marked Ostia’s first defensive perimeter and signal Rome’s early expansion toward the Tyrrhenian coast.
