Auguste Rodin’s 1877 sculpture, originally titled The Vanquished, depicts a life-size nude male figure. Its realism sparked accusations of casting from a live model. By omitting the spear, Rodin highlighted the figure’s sensuality and psychological depth. The title references a mythological era, symbolizing the awakening of human consciousness. As Rodin’s first major work to gain public acclaim, it exists in various casts globally.
