The Three Shades SculptureAuguste Rodin
Auguste Rodin’s The Three Shades (c. 1886) features three identical male figures, each a rotated cast of the same model. Originally part of The Gates of Hell, their contorted bodies and strained features embody despair, referencing Dante’s inscription ’Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.’ The dark bronze patina enhances the somber theme, reflecting Rodin’s admiration for Michelangelo and his exploration of human suffering and existential tension.
