Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, known in Basque as Donibane Garazi , took shape in the 12th c. as a market town and fortified crossing where the Nive meets the Laurhibar at the foot of the Pyrenees. Long contested on the France–Navarre frontier, its ramparts, steep lanes, and the 14th c. Notre-Dame Bridge preserve a landscape shaped by trade, war, and passage. It is also a defining threshold on the Camino de Santiago, where everyday Basque life mingles with the quiet intensity of departure.
