Nancy
Nancy, historic capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, is most vividly shaped by the 18th c., when Duke Stanisław Leszczyński recast the city around UNESCO-listed Place Stanislas, a ceremonial square where gilded gates and classical façades turn Enlightenment ideas of order into urban space. Around this planned grandeur, the old town keeps its winding medieval fabric, while c. 1900 the École de Nancy made Art Nouveau a defining local language—less a style than a statement of craft, identity, and modern life.
