Danaid (Marble Sculpture)Auguste Rodin

56
This marble sculpture (1885–1903) by Auguste Rodin depicts a Danaid, one of the 50 sisters in Greek mythology condemned to fill a leaking vessel eternally. It captures her collapse in exhaustion and despair, highlighting the expressive potential of the nude female form, blending sensuality with tragedy. Originally conceived for The Gates of Hell , it was excluded from the final version. Rodin’s signature is on the base, and multiple versions exist in marble and bronze.
