In this section (1518), Mercury holds Psyche’s hand with the cup of ambrosia of immortality. Behind stand Bacchus with a mask tied to his head and the elderly Saturn (green robe, holding a sickle). In the foreground recline Oceanus, nude and powerful, and Nereus, the bearded old man of the sea. The sphinx symbolizes fate.
