This grotesque fresco (1517–19), painted after the discovery of Nero’s Domus Aurea, reflects the Renaissance fascination with ancient Roman wall decoration. Nereids ride sea creatures beneath turbulent skies, blending playful marine myth with refined ornamental fantasy revived from classical antiquity.
