Written at St-Germain-en-Laye in 1624, this letter outlines Cardinal Richelieu’s instructions to Pierre de Bérulle, a French cardinal and diplomat, for papal negotiations concerning the marriage of Henriette of France to Charles Stuart, the future Charles I of England. Richelieu sought Pope Urban VIII’s approval, presenting the Catholic–Protestant union as a diplomatic means to extend French influence at the English court.
