Merovingian-Script Tax Exemption CharterKing Chilperic II

This parchment charter (716) records King Chilperic II confirming a fiscal rent and toll exemption first granted by Dagobert I to St Denis Abbey. Written in Merovingian script, it evolved from late Roman cursive and was used in the Frankish chancery during the 6th–7th cc. Marked by rapid strokes, abundant ligatures, and words flowing together, it spread into monastic circles and Irish scriptoria.
