Evolution of Gaulish Coinage

70
In the 2nd century BC, Gauls, after serving as mercenaries in Macedonian armies, returned with gold staters. They replicated these coins, initially following Greek designs, but soon added native motifs like wild boars and horses. This blend marked the evolution of Gaulish currency. Alongside gold staters, potins and bronze coins appeared, reflecting a dynamic monetary system that lasted until the Roman conquest.
