Adam Frans van der Meulen’s painting (c. 1665) depicts the Château de Vincennes, a royal residence since 1180 under Philippe Auguste. Set around 1660, it shows King Louis XIV’s court preparing for a hunt, featuring dynamic figures and horses. The château was expanded by Louis Le Vau (1658–1661) and served French kings until the court moved to Versailles. Later, its dungeon became a state prison, marking its historical transition.
