Goethes Residence in Rome 1787
Between 1600 and 1875, the Pontifical State used soul registers to record residents’ names, ages, and professions. Foreigners’ nationalities and denominations were noted, though names were often distorted. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe appears twice in the 1787–1791 register under the pseudonym Filippo Miller, living with painters like Johann Georg Schütz and J.H.W. Tischbein. These records highlight the vibrant cultural exchanges in Piazza Navona, Rome.
