Jakob Philipp Hackert’s 1794 oil on canvas captures the Cascata del Valcatoio in Isola di Sora (now Isola del Liri). The painting exemplifies the sublime beauty of the Italian landscape, a central theme in Hackert’s work. It highlights his skill in depicting nature’s grandeur. The piece is connected to Franz Rappolt, whose heirs loaned it; Rappolt was tragically murdered in Theresienstadt in 1943.
