The Triumph of the Name of JesusGiovanni Battista Gaulli
This illusionistic ceiling fresco (1676–79) dissolves architectural boundaries to evoke a heavenly eruption. Commissioned in the Jesuit mother church, it glorifies the divine name IHS , radiating light and salvation. Angels and the blessed ascend, while the damned fall into shadow—embodying Baroque spiritual drama and the Counter-Reformation’s emotional power.
