Opus Sectile Panel from Pantheon

Opus Sectile Panel from Pantheon

521
This opus sectile panel (118–125) combines Numidian yellow marble, pavonazzetto, and a central disk of Egyptian granite. Contrasting colors and textures are locked into a strict circular and rectangular scheme that anchors the surrounding floor. Such pavements embodied imperial Rome’s ideal of cosmic order while displaying control over distant quarries and trade routes.
