Putti Gathering Blossoms

236
This marble relief (3rd c.) shows three winged putti (winged child figures) gathering blossoms among dense, stylized shrubs. Such scenes commonly appear on Roman Dionysian sarcophagi used for elite burials. The perpetual harvest of flowers suggests an idealized, ever-renewing landscape appropriate to hopes for a blessed afterlife.
