These toads (15th c.), carved in volcanic stone, symbolized rain and fertility in Mexica cosmology. Their presence in offerings at the Templo Mayor connected them to Tlaloc, god of rain and mountains. Associated with earth’s moistening and renewal, toads embodied the life-bringing forces that sustained agriculture and nourished the divine.
