Ofrenda with Marine Offerings

749
Shells, coral fragments, turtle bones, and ceramic vessels lie arranged in dense layers within a stone-lined pit. This offering (15th c.), uncovered at the Templo Mayor in 2023, was dedicated to Tlaloc, the Mexica rain and water deity. Its stacked marine materials connect to ideas about the multiple watery realms that structured Mexica conceptions of the underworld.
