コロッセオの外側のファサード（70～80年）は、トスカナ式・イオニア式・コリント式の柱式で縁取られた重層アーチによって、ローマ建築の卓越した技術を示している。かつては多くの壁龕に神々や皇帝、英雄たちの像が置かれ、構造・装飾・政治的象徴性を調和させながら、帝国の威厳を表現していた。
