Roman Cavalry Overcoming Germanic Tribes

This panel (c. 180) comes from the Portonaccio Sarcophagus, found near Rome’s Portonaccio quarter and carved during the Marcomannic Wars, when Rome fought Germanic tribes along the Danube. The dense, high-relief scene shows Roman cavalry driving into chaotic ranks of long-haired Germanic warriors, their bodies tangled beneath rearing horses. The sarcophagus glorifies Rome’s victory and presents the Germans as fierce but ultimately overwhelmed foes—framing imperial conquest as heroic destiny.
