Garden Room Frescoes from Villa of Livia
These garden room frescoes (30–20 BC) depict an idealized garden with diverse plants and birds. Likely part of Livia Drusilla’s dowry, the villa near Rome served as a summer dining area. These frescoes symbolize Augustan prosperity and the bounty of Mother Earth, possibly reflecting Augustus’ initiation into the Eleusinian Mysteries, an ancient Greek cult centered on Demeter and Persephone that promised renewal and blessed afterlife.
