This late 1st c. marble portrait was found in Tivoli, a favored retreat of emperors where elite villas displayed official images to show loyalty. Nerva appears with the taut realism typical of early imperial portraiture. His brief rule (96–98) restored stability after Domitian and, by adopting Trajan, he introduced merit-based succession that shaped the Nerva-Antonine line—the era of the Five Good Emperors .
