These iron caltrops (13th c.) were scattered on roads and battlefields to injure enemy horses or slow advancing troops. Each spike was designed to always have one point upward, making them an effective anti-cavalry measure. Their presence reflects the strategic use of passive defenses during the Baltic Crusades.
