This Byzantine icon (10th c.) depicts the Virgin in solemn gesture, her hand raised in blessing. Known as Madonna Aracoeli, it is linked to the legend of Augustus’ vision at the site. Long venerated for its miraculous powers, the icon embodies the basilica’s deep spiritual and civic significance in Rome.
