Shell and Mosaic Nymphaeum Decoration

This 1st-c. fragment from a Roman nymphaeum shows elaborate shell and mosaic decoration. Nymphaea, shrines to water nymphs, were lavish fountains celebrating nature’s abundance. The colored tesserae—small cut pieces of stone or glass used to form mosaics—combine with shells and stucco to create a grotto-like surface evoking purity, flowing water, and the mythic presence of nymphs within Roman architecture.
