Emperor Vespasian
This marble bust (late 1st c.) shows Emperor Vespasian with receding hair, lined cheeks, and a firm jaw, avoiding the smooth idealization common in earlier imperial portraits. The unvarnished realism echoes the virtues of strength, modesty, and practicality he promoted after Nero’s rule. Such portraiture helped signal a return to sober, stable leadership.
